Canvas Tips

We use Canvas, a Learning Management System (LMS) that is used by more than 4,000 institutions worldwide. While most of these are professionally run colleges, universities, or high schools, Instructure (Canvas’ parent company) makes the product available to independent teachers at no charge. This is great because it allows small organizations, such as ours, to use a very feature rich product.

Tips

It makes more sense to put our Canvas tips inside of our Canvas course, except for those tips on how to get into the course. Here they are:

  • Clarifying how to use Canvas courses and accounts
    • Types of Canvas courses and accounts:
      • Canvas has two types of courses:
        • Those using the ‘Free-For-Teacher’ (FFT) service (us) and
        • Those affiliated with institutions (not us)
      • Canvas also has two type of user accounts:
        • People accessing a ‘Free-For-Teacher’ course (us) and
        • People accessing a course from an institution such as a high school or college (not us).
    • To get to our BSI course you need to:
      • Use the correct logon screen.
      • Have or create a free Canvas account.
        • To create one (This will also connect you to the course):
          • From the logon screen (see above):
            • Click the ‘Need a Canvas Account’ link,
            • Choose ‘I’m a Student’
            • Enter the requested information
              • Our class’ join code for 2024-2025 is TM64CL

  • The Canvas logon screen asks for email address (e.g. johnSmith45@gmail.com) and password. However, under some circumstances, what it really needs is your username (e.g. JSmith) and password. Try that if you are having trouble.

  • This student guide gives you a step by step to create an account and get into our course. (It should be very similar to the first tip. Between the two sets of instructions you hopefully will be able to get yourself established with course.)
